What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® is the brand name for botulinum toxin, a purified protein. As we age, our skin thins and becomes susceptible to wrinkling especially in areas with excessive muscle movement. When injected into facial muscles, BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks the nerves that create facial muscle movement. This allows the muscles to relax. As a result, skin around the site of injection also relaxes out of its wrinkled state, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles within a few days after injection.
BOTOX® injections are generally used to smooth wrinkles and fine lines, including worry lines, crow’s feet, and wrinkles around the lips. However, we are also able to employ BOTOX® injections clinically to relieve muscle pain and fatigue associated with TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding).
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite. Fillers are used to create additional volume in the face to fill out wrinkles. Dermal fillers naturally stimulate collagen production in areas that have lost elasticity, creating younger, firmer looking skin. Dentists can also use dermal fillers to augment the lips in cases of high lip lines or to correct uneven lips.
