Here at Cormier Family Dentistry, we believe in providing you with the absolute best in oral health care. Part of that commitment is keeping up with the latest in technological advancements. We’re pleased to have an advanced scanner available here in our office, which helps us to take the best possible care of our patients.
What is the XG3D scanner?
The XG3D allows us to take extremely detailed three-dimensional images of a patient’s mouth. It’s a type of machine called a cone-beam CT scanner. CT stands for computerized tomography, and refers to a process in which a computer uses a series of 2D images taken from multiple angles to generate a 3D model.
It takes just a few seconds to take a scan using the XG3D. The scanner rotates around the patient, taking the images. The scanner is designed to use the minimal amount of radiation necessary, adjusting the levels in order to maximize your safety while still getting the images that we need to properly care for your oral health. (The amount of radiation used in a dental X-ray or CT is extremely small.)
What can we use the scanner for?
The XG3D scanner gives us the ability to visualize the structures of the mouth in three dimensions. This includes teeth and their roots, jaw bone tissue, nerves, and blood vessels. This knowledge can be important in various settings, including:
- Determining whether the jaw bone is strong enough for the placement of dental implants.
- Planning a dental implant procedure, to find the implant placement that is most likely to be safe and stable over the long term.
- Assessing the wisdom teeth (or, less commonly, other teeth) to determine whether they are impacted, and planning an extraction procedure if necessary.
- Diagnosing damage to teeth, such as cavities and cracks in teeth, in areas that are not visible to the eye.
- Diagnosing other problems of the jaw bone, such as tumors.
