When a tooth is missing or must be extracted, it is important to replace the tooth to maintain the integrity of your other teeth. Dental implants, available at our Shreveport family dentistry practice, represent the most secure and stable method of replacing missing teeth that is currently available. Dental implants can be used to anchor a single dental crown, a dental bridge, or even a full set of dentures without having to rely on surrounding natural teeth for support.
At Cormier Family Dentistry, we are happy to help you understand all of your dental options. When it comes to choosing a preventive measure to protect your other teeth from the effects of tooth loss or extraction, there are many options available. However, when it comes to replacing missing teeth, implant-supported restorations offer a multitude of benefits with relatively few potential risks. During your consultation to discuss dental implants at our Shreveport office, we will take time to walk you through all of your treatment options and provide you with the information you need to make the most confident decision possible regarding your dental care.
Simply contact Cormier Family Dentistry today, and we’ll happily assist you in scheduling your initial consultation.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant provides a metal root in the space where your extracted or missing tooth was previously located. The implant is typically composed of a sturdy metal such as titanium to offer long-lasting and solid support. The implant is then capped with a permanent crown that completes the smile with a tooth that matches the shape, size, and color of your remaining teeth restoring the aesthetic appeal of the smile while also restoring the function of the tooth.
Am I a candidate for a dental implant?
If you have lost a tooth to trauma or extraction, you might be a candidate for an implant. However, a successful dental implant requires that the patient exhibit a healthy and sturdy jawbone to support acclimation to the implant. For patients with weak or unhealthy jawbones, a traditional dental bridge may be the preferable solution.
For patients missing multiple teeth, a dental implant might offer reinforcement when installed in combination with a dental bridge. A dental implant anchors a dental bridge without having to rely on the natural teeth adjacent to a gap for support.
What is the procedure like?
The full process of installing an implant takes a few months. The implant is screwed into the gum via an incision. Once the implant is placed the gum is sutured and allowed to heal. It takes three to six months for the gum to fully heal and the jawbone to grow around the implant. This healing process is known as osseointegration. It is possible to wear a temporary crown during this healing period to maintain the appearance of your smile as well as restore some of the function of your tooth.
After the implant has been fully received into the jawbone and healed properly, an abutment is placed on the implant to create a base for the tooth. Your permanent restoration will be created to fit this abutment. At Cormier Family Dentistry, this crown will be created in office using our CEREC restoration milling machine and installed at the same appointment. Once the permanent crown is placed, you will regain full use of the tooth and enjoy speaking, eating, and smiling as you once did prior to tooth loss.
