Are You Suffering From TMJ Pain in Shreveport?
The jaw is an incredible structure. It consists of two parts – the upper jaw and the lower jaw. The lower jar is the part responsible for movement and allows you to talk, chew, and even make some expressions in your daily life. Working in conjunction with the lower jaw is a tiny triangle-shaped joint located just in front of the ear. Known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), this joint is covered in cartilage tissue to protect it and allow fluid movement. When the cartilage becomes thin, the joint becomes inflamed causing large amounts of pain, resulting in a condition called temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.
What causes TMJ pain?
The cause may not be clear because many issues can cause TMJ pain. Because of it’s high level of sensitivity, large amounts of emotional, psychological, or physical stress can cause TMD. Patients with musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis are naturally more prone to the condition. Trauma and poor posture can even contribute to the problem. Large amounts of emotional stress can lead people to grind their teeth (bruxism), which will also lead to TMD.
What are the symptoms of temporomandibular disorder?
TMD is most easily recognized by a pain at the joint and is often associated with a clicking or popping noise. Some individuals even experience tinnitus and pain in the ear. Often times, the surrounding muscles in the neck and shoulders also experience tension and pain. More severe symptoms may even include a locked or dislocated jaw and blurred vision.
How do I find relief from TMD?
Often times, standard over-the-counter pain medications, such ibuprofen or acetaminophen can relieve pain and swelling. If necessary, Dr. Adam Cormier or Dr. Jana Cormier can prescribe other pain medications. Ice packs and moist heat applied directly to the area can help alleviate pain. Sleeping on your side at night may also help relief pain to the area. If needed, an oral appliance can be provided to eliminate overnight strain on the joint or to correct misalignment.
How can I prevent TMD?
Emotional stress and repetitive chewing motions are the leading causes of TMD. To prevent the disorder, avoid chewy or hard foods, such as gummy candies and chewing gum. Alternate chewing on each side of the mouth with smaller, easy bites. Avoid compulsive chewing habits that can exacerbate the condition such as chewing on fingernails, pencils, or pen caps.
If your TMD is stress related, it’s important to remove yourself from those situations to the best of your abilities. Allow yourself time to relax and look for activities that would allow you to unwind, such as reading a book, a bubble bath, or going for walks. In addition to avoiding stressful situations and repetitive chewing motions, a proper diet and good posture can also help prevent further problems.
Temporomandibular disorder is very common so every patient seen at Cormier Family Dentistry will be evaluated during his or her routine exam for any potential problems that could lead to this condition.
